Gmail Bug Accidentally Resets 150,000 Accounts; Users Lose Mail Messages, Chats and Contacts

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 02:42 AM PST

An estimated total of 150,000 Gmail users have reportedly lost their Gmail messages, contacts, chats and everything else over the weekend. There is a Gmail bug in there, that has been resetting several accounts, making them to be new users, complete with the Gmail welcome messages! So a few of the unlucky users have been reporting, saying that their precious messages, attachments, as well as Google Chat logs had gone.

Google has responded and said that a Gmail bug is responsible for completely resetting accounts. In fact, affected users received a welcome message as if they had just created their account when they opened their accounts.

But there's good news here. The way Google is explaining it on its Apps Status Dashboard: "Google engineers are working to restore full access. Affected users may be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts."

So maybe this is not so bad after all. As long as Google restores the messages, all we had was a big scare. Will Google restore all the messages? We've contacted Google, and will let you know when we hear back.

However, as we speak Google has been announcing this: "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we anticipate a resolution for all users in the near futere. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may possibly alter."

This issue affects less than 0.08% of the Google Mail userbase. Just lets hope you are not among this tiny (?) user group! Was your Gmail account reset by this nasty bug?
