My Opinions about Nokia 500 and Symbian Anna OS

Nokia 500 is a New Upcoming Symbian Smartphone that would run the Latest version of Symbian OS a.k.a. Anna. Nokia 500 Smartphone was announced last month and was expected to release within Q3 this year i.e. by the end of September. So far, Nokia hasn't released this Smartphone in the global market but I expect it to launch soon, maybe in October.

Nokia 500 Smartphone is loaded with features that have the potential to attract the masses. After the emergence of Android, Symbian has taken a slide in Global Smartphone market share. Symbian Anna OS has several interesting features and could provide Nokia with the much needed push.

According to a few unreliable resources on the web, Nokia 500 would be priced around Rs. 11,000 ($227.64) which, according to me is an apt price for this Smartphone.

Let's discuss about Nokia 500 Smartphone's Technical Specifications.

Display Quality

Nokia 500 Smartphone comes with a 3.2 inch TFT Capacitive Touchscreen Display that offers a display resolution of 360 x 640 pixels and a pixel density of ~229 ppi.

Display resolution of Nokia 500 is the same as on other Nokia Symbian Smartphones like the 52xx and 58xx series, there are several HQ games and apps on Ovi Store for that resolution, maybe that's one reason why Nokia has rested with this resolution.

I expect Nokia 500 Smartphone's Touch to be sensitive and responsive. I have personally used most of the 52xx and 58xx devices and thus I feel that display screen would be a strength for this phone.

Memory

Nokia 500 Smartphone comes with 2 GB of internal storage, 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of RAM. Nokia 500's storage can be upgraded to 32 GB with the help of an external microSD card.

I don't think there is much to say about this feature of Nokia 500. With 256 MB of RAM, you would be able to multitask fine on this device. Since Nokia 500 Smartphone doesn't support HD video playback, 32 GB of memory would easily support all the apps, games, videos and other multimedia files that you may want to use on the device.

Connectivity Options

Like all other Smartphones in this price bracket, Nokia 500 Smartphone supports GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP + EDR.

It would have been better if it has Bluetooth v3.0 because file transfer using Bluetooth v3.0 is almost double as compared to the former one, around 80KB/s.

Camera & Video Quality

Nokia 500 Smartphone has a 5 MP camera that captures pictures at 2592 x 1944 pixel resolution. Most of the Nokia Symbian Smartphones come with at least a single LED flash that why I am a bit disappointed with Nokia here, they should have considered adding an LED and autofocus to this device.

Although, in good lighting conditions, the pictures you're going to take from Nokia 500's 5 MP sensor would look really fine since Nokia uses pretty high quality of lens.

Also, the Smartphone records videos of VGA resolution at 15fps which I feel is a serious negative aspect of this phone.

My own cell phone i.e. Samsung Monte records videos at 24fps and sometimes my videos look blurred, unclear and shady due to lack of flash.

Camera and Video section of Nokia 500 needs some serious development.

Processing Unit

The most attractive part of Nokia 500 Smartphone from a user's point of view is 1GHz ARM 11 processor which would make the user experience much snappier, without a doubt. This is one features that is going to differentiate Nokia 500 from other Smartphones in this price range. AFAIK, Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i is the nearest Smartphone having a 1GHz processor, priced around Rs. 13,000 ($269).

Nokia Ovi Store is compact one, it doesn't have 200,000 apps to flaunt but still it has all the major apps available for both Android and iOS platforms. There are several apps on Ovi Store that need a fast processor to operate, they would come to life with Nokia's 1GHz ARM 11 processor.

Operating System

As told earlier in this article, Nokia 500 Smartphone runs on Symbian Anna OS and there are several interesting features of Anna that you should know.

Symbian Anna OS offers a new user interface with crisp, glossy icons that makes the user experience more pleasurable.

With split screen messaging and full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode, it would make it easier to type and read simultaneously.

Symbian Anna OS comes with enhanced Nokia maps that would enable you to locate the places where you want to go, find Public Transportation routes and timings, track your path and share the places that you visit on social websites like Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter.

Anna OS comes with an advanced web browser that loads pages a lot quicker than the old Symbian browser. Also, the new web browser support Flash Lite 4.0 which means that you can enjoy YouTube videos in good resolution.

For business people, Symbian Anna OS has a lot to offer. When Nokia says they have created a Smartphone, they mean that they have created a Business phone. Symbian Anna provides business grade security and improved data encryption to its email client. It also allows business professional to securely access their company intranet using IPSEC and SSL VPN enablers.

There is one more feature of Symbian Anna OS but you won't be to use it on Nokia 500 Smartphone – NFC. NFC or Near Field Communication is a technology that lets users share contacts, photos, videos and play games in a jiffy. Unfortunately, this features is only available on Nokia C7 at the moment.

Whether to Buy Nokia 500 or not?

Nokia 500 is an average Smartphone, no doubt, 1GHz processor and Symbian Anna OS are attractive but still there are a few good Smartphones that are not too far away on the price line and can be considered.

For example, Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini ST15i has 1GHz Qualcomm processor and does HD video recording and Samsung Galaxy Ace., although has a 800MHz processor but records videos at 30fps. Also, both these devices run Android which has, currently, quite better apps.

Nokia 500 hasn't been launched yet and by the time it would launch, the price of those phones is expected to drop a little more.

The price mentioned above is just an "expected price," the actual price is still under the veil, once I get to know the final price, it would become clear whether Nokia 500 is a "value for money Smartphone" or not.
