Firefox 4 Releasing Officially Soon; Download Via FTP Now

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 05:41 AM PDT

The Firefox 4 stable is coming with a new interface, HTML5 support, 3D on the web, faster startup times and graphics rendering, and other goodness. Although the official site has not yet announced this final release, ftp downloads has come out already.

In the meantime, here is what Mozilla’s site states — “Mozilla Firefox 4 is almost here! We updated the Firefox 4 release candidate with some minor security fixes and updates to several localizations, including the addition of a Vietnamese localized version. Firefox will now ship in 80 languages. We're excited to deliver the new features, look and speed of Firefox 4 to our more than 400 million users worldwide.”

In July, Mozilla released a beta version of Firefox 4 and later pushed back its official release date from fall 2010 to this year. The new browser features an improved user interface with tabs on top of the URL bar (Mozilla deems this the “Awesome Bar“) and additional features such as Switch to Tab, which makes it easier to locate open tabs when pecking out URLs.

Obviously, Mozilla is hoping Firefox 4 to ward off stiff competition from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google’s Chrome browsers. While IE dominates the browser market, it has been falling with Firefox in second place and Chrome third. A new JagerMonkey JS engine adds speed to Firefox 4 and WebGL will allow better graphics. WebGL will make it easier for web developers to create interactive 3D games, vivid graphics, and new visual experiences for Firefox without requiring a special plug-in.

How to Download Firefox 4 via FTP:

Firefox4.tar.bz2 for Linux 32-bit
Firefox4.tar.bz2 for Linux 64-bit
For mac and Win32: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/4.0/

And for folks who are waiting for the official release of Firefox 4, it could very well happen today, 22nd March 2011. That is unless of course, if developers currently testing the release candidate come across any major issues or serious bugs. According to Mozilla’s Damon Sicore, “If at any time we discover issues that would block final release, we would issue an RC2 as soon as possible, reset the ship date, and communicate to everyone.

Bomgar Launches iPad 2 Rep Console For Collaborative Remote Support

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:54 PM PDT

Bomgar, the market leader in appliance-based remote support app provider, has launched the latest update to their Bomgar Appliance. The appliance is the very first collaborative remote support representative console designed for the iPad, iPad2 and iPhone (devices running Apple's iOS). Bomgar iPad Rep Console will allow IT support technicians to access, view and fix a computer or mobile device remotely, using an iPad, iPad 2 (or even an iPhone and iPod Touch).

With the launch of this iPad remote support software, Bomgar now enables IT support and service technicians to remotely support the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, by providing users with custom configuration profiles on their Apple iOS devices. With a few simple clicks, users can automatically configure their email, calendars, device security policies, VPN settings, Wi-Fi settings and more.

Bomgar iPad Rep Console lets support technicians work on multiple remote support sessions at once, plus invite other in-house and external support reps to simultaneously collaborate on the same session. Customers, on the other hand, will not need to have pre-installed software on their device, or be part of any pre-defined "buddy list" to receive support, according to Bomgar.

Furthermore, the iPad Rep Console works in conjunction with the Bomgar appliance, making it the only iPad remote support solution that does not pass session information through a third-party server, keeping sensitive data safe and sound behind a company's firewall.

Emphasizing that enterprises work under strict compliance regulations, Nathan McNeill, co-founder and VP of product strategy at Bomgar said — "With the Bomgar iPad Rep Console, we're giving support technicians the flexibility and mobility they need, plus the security assurances their companies require."

Bomgar says one in three North American companies now support the iPhone as a business platform. It is no surprise, Bomgar feels "CIOs can no longer afford to ignore the time their support team is spending to help users configure these devices…".

"Giving enterprises the tools to automatically and securely configure the iPhone and iPad is another step in our commitment to providing the most robust and secure remote support solutions for mobile devices. We're closely evaluating the evolution of the various mobile platforms, and we'll continue to provide customers with the most advanced remote support options possible as new devices hit the market", according to the company. The Bomgar iPad Rep Console will be available to all Bomgar customers this summer.
